As of February 8, 2007, the following firestop products have been tested for Volatile Organic
Compounds (VOC) by Weck Laboratories Inc. following EPA 24 test methods.

To further understand VOC’s, please read below.
•
What is a VOC?  A "VOC" is a volatile organic compound.  VOC’s are normally
associated with organic solvents but can be other organic chemicals as well.  The reason
VOC’s are being monitored closely is because they contribute to the formation of smog.  If
the Nitrogen oxides (commonly referred to as NOX) emitted from automobile exhaust are
combined with VOC’s in the presence of sunlight, the result is smog.

How are VOC’s tested? The standard test for VOC’s is EPA Method 24. EPA Method 24
is a collection of various ASTM test methods.
•
The section that is truly relevant to Firestop Sealants is Indoor Environmental Quality,
Credit 4.1, Low-Emitting Materials, Adhesives & Sealants. In this section, the stated
requirement is that the VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) content of each adhesive
and/or sealants being used on this project is below 250 g/l.
